A Unit
uax12 a unit

u12 selectors and meters

U12 allotter relays

The A unit is the first of the switching racks to be installed, and that sits to the right of the c unit when viewed from the front of the racks. Its dimensions are the same as the C unit except that it is 2’ wide. This unit is divided into two airtight sections, the lower containing the auto equipment, the upper the connection strips. The idea behind this was that the racks were designed to be installed in unheated buildings, so the units being airtight would minimize the condensation and general dampness inside the racks. The covers for the apparatus were only to be removed when work was actually taking place on the equipment; they were to be kept on at all other times. The fact that the connection strips are in another compartment was that it was envisaged that more time would be spent doing wiring work (jumpering etc being done in here) than working on the equipment. Also the wiring compartments are all gasketed together so that the damp cannot penetrate the inter-unit cables.

The auto equipment, in the A unit, is of the pre-2000 type, and consists of the following: (dealing with the front of the unit first)

25 line circuits, each consisting of three relays, L, K and P. These are mounted at the bottom of the unit on a swing out gate (so that you can gain access for wining) also mounted on this gate are the allotter relays, and the allotter uniselector, and four linefinder uniselectors. These are of the 50-point verity. Above this gate is mounted the subs meters, plus an overflow meter. The next shelf is home to the four connectors. These are pre-2000 type, with about 25 relays attached to the base. Needless to say they are absolute nightmares to take in and out of the unit!

The rear of the unit has two relay set shelves in it. The lower shelf has accommodation for four junction relay sets, the shelf above housing four multimetering sets, which are associated with the junction set beneath it.

The top compartment, as I mentioned before has the wiring connections in it. At the bottom is the final selector multiple, above it the linefinder multiple. There is also a misc strip connection mounted at the rear of the rack.
