Switching Unit

The UAX7 A units were of two differing types, the Aa unit, and the Ab unit::

UAX7 A unit drawing

The layout of the Aa unit is shown above. Working from the bottom of the rack towards the top the equipment is as follows:

Shelf D:
This shelf accomodates the line subscribers line relays. These are unusual as they are 3000 type line relays, instead of the more usual 600 type. There are 3 relays per line, L, K and P. Due to the size of the relays, this shelf only accomodates 80 lines. The line relays are mounted on plates that are two relays wide and 15 relays deep, with a square removable cover.

Shelf C:
At the right hand end of the shelf are two relay cans that contain the remaining 20 subs line circuit relays.
To the left of these are the two primary allotter uniselectors, with test keys and subscribers preference keys above.
To the left of these, are the two primary allotter relay sets. These are mounted in standard pre2000 type jack in relaysets.
The first two positions on this shelf accomodate linefinders 9 and 10. These are 100 point, pre2000 type selectors that look for the calling line.

Shelf B:
This shelf accomodates linefinders 1-8, again all pre-2000 type selectors.
Above this shelf is a shelf of 100 type meters.  These are the meters for each subs line cct on the unit. There is one for each line plus overflow meters for various parts of the switching train.

Shelf A:
This shelf accomodates 8 final selectors. These again are pre2000 type. This time they are 200 outlet selectors. The selectors could be of two differing types, either plain 200 outlet finals, or 200 outlet with 2-10 PBX hunting on the second hundred outlets.

At the top of the rack are the multiple IDF blocks and the misc connection blocks to, for connecting to other racks.

The Ab unit is indentical, except that it doesn't have the primary allotters, and the control relay sets. They were designed to be installed alongside the Aa unit to form a pair, and therefore they use the  Aa units control gear.
